The Hart Breaking Downfall of a Hero

A common saying is “You should never meet your heroes”. Ever since I heard that quote, I have always taken exception to it. My main argument was, why wouldn’t you want to meet your heroes?

I’ve met my three childhood heroes: Ric Flair (a huge disappointment), William Shatner (a delight), and Bret “The Hitman” Hart.

In some way, I found I could relate to Bret. He wasn’t the biggest or the strongest. But as a child growing up, I never doubted The Hitman could beat any challenger. When I met Hart, he was very gracious and cordial. When I departed, I told him thank you for never letting me down and being my hero. He said he was glad he never let me down and thanked me for letting him be my hero. Twelve-year-old me shrieked in joy as forty-one-year-old me walked out on cloud nine.

Unfortunately, my hero has let me down, and it is as heartbreaking now as it would have been when I was a child.

At an event hosted by Johnny I Pro Show in Montreal, Hart spoke about one of pro wrestling’s most infamous events, the “Montreal Screw job”. This took place at World Wrestling Entertainment’s (WWE) annual November event, Survivor Series, in 1997. This event was the unscripted, real-life double cross of Hart, orchestrated by WWE Chairman Vincent McMahon and opponent/real-life rival Shawn Michaels to get the championship off of Hart in his last night with the company. Ever since that night, the mere mention of it elicits debates and discussions regarding every bit of it, even the legitimacy of whether it was scripted or not (the key participants have vehemently denied it being scripted to this day).

When speaking about this, Hart dropped a bombshell: “I think that Shawn and Vince were sleeping with each other. I’m just telling you, I think I’m very close to the truth here. Shawn and Vince were lovers. I’m being dead honest. When I look back, it’s like I got caught between two lovers, and I got shafted and screwed over, and Shawn was so envious and jealous of my position that he finally had to sleep with Vince to get it.” Hart said.

He concluded, “I would say it to Shawn if he were right here. I would actually like to have Shawn come clean and say, ‘Look, we were lovers.’ Because I’m sure they were.”

In an effort to present all sides, Michaels was difficult to work with then (he has since become a Born Again Christian and changed his life), and the controversy surrounding McMahon and his alleged illegal sexual acts is well known. But this is a reach for attention, using McMahon’s controversy to garner attention for himself and create scandalous headlines. A far cry from the heroic being Hart was during his career.

Ever since his in-ring career ended because of a severe concussion suffered in late 1999 (Due to a mule kick delivered by Bill Goldberg), Hart has had some very strong opinions regarding all aspects of the business, most of them negative. To be fair, Hart has suffered great loss and tragedy in the pro wrestling business. His brother Owen died performing a pre-match stunt for WWE at an event in May 1999. The aforementioned screw job and his career ending early, one could almost sympathize with Hart. Personally, I always defended Hart’s takes because deep down I viewed him as I did as a child, the morally upstanding hero that would never let me down.

That is, until now, and I cannot defend him any longer.

For context, Hart suffered a stroke in 2002, and it is widely believed the concussion that ended his career caused it. Strokes can cause many long-lasting mental issues, including mood swings and instability. In 2009, Hart returned to WWE on Monday Night Raw and buried the hatchet with Michaels. It appeared decades of personal and professional rivalry had been put to bed. That is, until these comments.

Many have dismissed Hart’s claims. Professional wrestling legends Kevin Nash, Jim Cornette, and Eric Bischoff (whom Hart has gone on numerous tirades against) have all said this is false, and Bischoff even suggested Hart seek professional help.

As a middle-aged adult, my heart breaks to see my hero become a shell of what once was. An upstanding man who would mostly fight for what was right. Now, he fights for clicks and adulating cheers from crowds. The cheers are done for the blistering burials Hart unleashes whenever he feels the need on whoever he feels deserves it. Not for what they should be for, tales of road stories and matches from the greatest ring technician ever.

As for me, I choose to remember Bret for what he meant to me as a child. His great matches and moments that are etched in time. When these episodes occur (and they will continue), I realize I will have to try harder to find that warm nostalgia of Hart. Regardless of what happens next, I will know that I met him when he was my hero and that he never let me down. That will have to be the lasting memory. Because if it were anything after that, it would be the HART breaking downfall of my hero.

The Eyes Have It

An American Football season is unlike any other, no matter the level at which it is competed at. It doesn’t have the plodding nature of a baseball season, and it lacks the lulls that hockey and basketball provide. It is a nine-to-twenty-game sprint (depending on level of competition, location, etc.) to desired championship glory. It is what happens during that sprint that keeps us captivated, and in college football, it has opened a firestorm of controversy and hot takes.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are currently 9-2 and are ranked ninth in the College Football Playoff rankings. Since starting the season 0-2. They have won nine consecutive games and have dominated in doing so, beating all opponents by double digits. Their ranking would give them one of the coveted 12 spots in the playoffs if the season ended today. That is where the perceived issues begin.

One of the teams Notre Dame lost to (in week one), the Miami Hurricanes, are ranked 12th. They currently have identical 9-2 records. This has led many to cry for Justice, brand bias, and other ridiculous claims. What makes them ridiculous is that they are not based in fact or even on what the eyes see.

POINT 1: YES, HEAD TO HEAD MATTERS, BUT…

Since the aforementioned loss, calling Notre Dame dominant would be an understatement. They have won 9 consecutive games by close to thirty points per game. They have done so against two ranked opponents (USC and at Pittsburgh) and two Group of 5 teams (Navy and Boise State) that could play for their conference championship. Notre Dame’s only other loss occurred to Texas A&M two weeks after the Miami loss. That loss was by one point (due to a botched hold on an extra point try and an egregious missed holding call on the game-winning touchdown). Texas A&M is undefeated and ranked fourth.

Miami is a different story. They lost at home to unranked Louisville, then on the road to unranked Southern Methodist University (SMU). Since that win, Louisville is mired in a three-game losing streak. SMU has surged, but the Louisville loss still hurts the Hurricanes in a larger way because of what they have shown as of late.

I do think head-to-head matters, but it is not empirical. Basing a decision on one game, especially one from week one, does not tell the whole story. By basing it only on that result, you are saying a team cannot improve or get worse. Two things we know to be false.

POINT 2: JUST COMPARE THEM AGAINST EACH OTHER
This seems like a logical conclusion, and it is one made in large part by Miami supporters. However, it does not help Miami’s case; as a matter of fact, it hurts it even more. In the table below (Courtesy of Bryan Driskell of Irish Breakdown), you see a better comparison is Notre Dame versus Alabama (ranked tenth). In almost every comparison, Notre Dame is better than Miami. This includes key metrics Strength of Record (SOR), Strength of Schedule (SOS), and quality wins.

POINT 3: WHO NEEDS THE COMMITTEE, THEY JUST GET IT WRONG ANYWAY
Before the playoff began in the 2014 season, college football used the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). This would put various rankings into the computer and average teams out. Another common crying point by Miami is that the committee does not know football. In the table below, we see that Miami would not even be in the playoffs using the BCS formula, as they wouldn’t be in the top twelve. Also of note, Notre Dame is ranked in the top twelve in all of them except one (A&H) and holds an average ranking of seventh. This would not only put Notre Dame in the playoffs, but also give them a home playoff game

FINAL POINT: STOP SCHEDULING NOTRE DAME

This is just as ridiculous as the age-old diatribe “Notre Dame should join a conference”. The only reason Miami is even in consideration for a playoff spot is that they beat Notre Dame. Without that game, they would need countless miracles to get back into consideration. Miami is currently fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) standings. To even get to the conference championship game, they need to win at Pittsburgh and get a lot of help. If that win over Notre Dame was against a lesser team, they would not even be in the top 20.

As we approach the final regular-season weekend, the case for Miami is not comparing it to Notre Dame. It is what you see from them. When you watch Miami, do you see one of the 12 best teams in the country? I do not feel that is the case. They have been inconsistent, and in the games they have lost, they have given away the game through penalties and inexcusable turnovers. If Miami misses the playoffs, they have no one to blame but themselves. Not a committee and certainly not Notre Dame.

College Football Week 4 Picks

Last week I did not find games that I felt were appealing to guess and I had a busy week. So I took a week off. Two weeks ago, I finished 3-2, bringing the season record to 8-3. So as conference play kicks off we have 4 games on tap in this week’s picks, but first some observations. 

1,2,3 AND THEN EVERYONE ELSE: Last time I wrote about Georgia and Alabama seemingly being on a crash course in both the SEC Championship and probable College Football Playoff matchup. Let’s throw Ohio State into the mix. These three teams have separated themselves from the pack. It appears it is them and then everyone else. Could a team knock them off? Certainly. But can it happen twice? Doubtful. 

SUN SHINES ON THE SUN BELT: In week 2 Georgia Southern, Marshall, and Appalachian State all went on the road against Nebraska, Notre Dame, and then sixth-ranked Texas A&M respectively, and won games. This is nothing but good for college football (despite my Fighting Irish being on the losing end of arguably the worst loss in school history). This gives parity and proves that early games cannot be overlooked

HUSKING FOR SAVINGS? Following the aforementioned loss to Georgia Southern, Nebraska fired Head Coach Scott Frost, giving him the dubious distinction of being the first head coach fired this season (Arizona State’s Herm Edwards was the second fired last week). The shocking aspect is that had Nebraska waited until October 1, they would have only paid frost 7.5 million instead of the 15 million they owe him. Nebraska under interim head coach Mickey Joseph and was housed 49-14 by Oklahoma in Lincoln. My point is, Scott Frost wouldn’t have done worse than that and even if he had, was anyone disappointed in Nebraska this season so far or enough to justify spending an extra 7.5 million to fire him three weeks early? I do not think so. 

#10 Arkansas (3-0) vs #23 Texas A&M (2-1)

Last year Arkansas coming out party was upsetting then-undefeated Texas A&M. Since then their only loss has been to Alabama. Texas A&M rebounded from their shocking upset to Appalachian State to win a slugfest with Miami. Using an unpenetrable defense to overcome offensive shortcomings.

The Aggie defense could have a performance as they did against Miami but they will need offense in this game. The Razorbacks have KJ Jefferson as Quarterback and Raheim Sanders and Running Back averaging 147 yards per game. That is bad news for the Aggies as they are susceptible to the run and Arkansas can use that to their advantage 

For me, if the Aggie defense can get to the Razorbacks early and take them off their game early they have a chance. But that offense has been notoriously bad for Texas A&M. Arkansas will allow some points, but I’m thinking the Aggie defense wears down and allows a score late. The Hogs are the pick 

PREDICTION ARKANSAS 31 TEXAS A&M 23

  #5 Clemson (3-0) vs #21 Wake Forest (3-0)

This is the first test this season for both of these teams. Clemson had their unprecedented run in the ACC Championships end last season finishing a disappointing 8-5. This was in large part due to their offensive struggles and the struggles of Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei. This season the offense has looked better than last season and despite losing Defensive Coordinator Brent Venables to Oklahoma the defense has shown flashes of rounding back into dominance

Wake Forest is led by Quarterback Sam Hartman. This offense revolves around the Run Pass Option and Hartman runs it masterfully. The problem is the defense they see in Clemson has one of the best defensive fronts in the country. They will need to run the ball to free Hartman up to make plays. 

To beat the Tigers a team must be well-rounded. Wake Forest relies on explosive plays and that will play right into Clemson’s strength. This game will be close for the first half. But the good roundness of the Tigers wins out in the end. 

PREDICTION CLEMSON 38 WAKE FOREST 20

 #20 Florida (2-1) vs #11 Tennessee (3-0)

After week one, there was a thought that Florida could be back on the rise. However, a loss to Kentucky and a missed field goal from USF-inducing victory have pundits questioning if they jumped to conclusions. Tennessee has hummed right along after last season’s blazing finish. 

The Volunteers are led by dual-threat Quarterback Hendon Hooker. This season he has completed 70 percent of his passes. Florida runs out a well-rounded defense to combat the Vol’s high-powered offense. Although they have been susceptible to big plays.

For the Gators, they have to find a way to run the ball consistently. That means Quarterback Anthony Richardson needs to throw the ball well and make plays with his feet. The theory here is the offense is your best defense. 

In rivalry games such as this, anything can happen and usually does. At some point, talent just wins out. The Vols are the better team and they prove it by winning in front of what will be a rowdy home crowd. 

PREDICTION FLORIDA 20 TENNESSEE 33

 Wisconsin (2-1) vs #3 Ohio State (3-0)

It will be a blackout at the Horseshoe for this showdown between two teams that pride themselves in physicality. They just show it in different ways

In week one, Ohio State was tested by Notre Dame (they pulled away late using a punishing rushing attack) and have blown out two underwhelming opponents since. 

Wisconsin uses a rushing attack led by running back Braelon Allen. He currently averages over six yards per carry and has five touchdowns. Quarterback Graham Mertz has finally shown the promise he had as a recruit. He has completed over 70 percent of his passes and leads the B10 with 11.2 yards per pass completion. 

The main issue for the Badgers is how to stop the Ohio State potent offense led by CJ Stroud. And Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Ohio State could be more reliant on the throw with running back TreVeyon Henderson banged up. This could play into Wisconsin’s hand defensively, being able to put pressure on Stroud and possibly forcing some mistakes. 

I think this Ohio State team is a different beast. That will show in this game. I do not think it’s a blowout but much like they did against the Irish, Buckeyes pull away late.

College Football Week 2 Picks

I have always felt that any major reaction to what happens in week one of college football is an overreaction. Despite this belief, there are trends and things we can see that could give insight into how the season is going to go. Last week I went 5-1, a decent way to start. This week has five more games I will be picking. But first, some week one observations.  

SEC DOMINANCE: The Southeastern Conference (SEC) went 14-1 last week (the only loss being LSU to Florida State). I will say that some of these games were very predictable and the opponents were grossly overmatched. However, there are some impressive wins out there. Arkansas held off a very game Cincinnati squad that qualified for the College Football Playoff (CFP). In Gainsville, the Florida Gators beat defending PAC-12 Champions, the then seventh-ranked Utah Utes, and finally defending national champions Georgia Bulldogs drubbed the Oregon Ducks 49-3, which leads to point number two 

A TIDE VS BULLDOG INEVITABILITY? Georgia played like a team with something to prove, giving quite the rude welcome to Former Defensive Coordinator Dan Lanning in his first game as the Head Coach at Oregon. This game had many looking at a possible upset and doubting the 16.5 point-line. Once again, Georgia and Alabama do not play each other in the regular season and seem to be destined for an SEC championship game showdown. I do not know if it is inevitable that both teams make the CFP. But I do think Georgia is certainly the best team in the country right now.  

PAC-12 DEEP SIXED: This past weekend both Oregon and Utah lost. This has many once again declaring the PAC-12 will be left out of the CFP. That is an unfair conclusion. USC could very well run the table and if they do that, they most assuredly would get in. The problem is they play Utah and Oregon. Both teams are more complete than USC and that is a tough hill for any team to climb let alone an unproven one. It looks like another year where the PAC-12 will cannibalize themselves out of the playoff. 

 

#1 Alabama Crimson Tide vs Texas Longhorns

Is Texas back? Getting Redshirt Freshman transfer Quarterback Quinn Ewers from Ohio State to couple with powerhouse Running Back Bijan Robinson is a good start. Last week Texas throttled the overmatched University of Louisiana Monroe. Now the competition goes up in the form of college football measuring stick Alabama.  

The Crimson Tide lost their usual number of players to the pros this offseason. However, Heisman Trophy winner, Quarterback Bryce Young and Defensive Lineman Tim Smith, and their coach is some guy named Nick Saban. They routed Utah State in a typical Tide-dominating fashion and appear to be ready for a run at the championship.   

Two things are working in the Longhorns’ favor. First, the game is being played in Texas and the game is set for a noon kickoff when it will be a balmy 86 degrees. One way to slow down a high-powered offense like Alabama’s is the heat. The bigger question is can Ewers, in only his second start, slay the beast that is Alabama? Nick Saban (much like his mentor Bill Belichick) loves to take away the main thing teams want to do. Texas will want Robinson to get going Early to take pressure off of Ewers in his first big game situation. I think it works for a half, but the Tide do what they do and roll late  

PREDICTION ALABAMA: 45 TEXAS 24 

  #24 Tennessee Volunteers vs #17 Pittsburgh Panthers

Last week Pittsburgh showed some real moxie in knocking off rival West Virginia in the return of the “Backyard Brawl”. Despite the victory, the Panthers allowed big plays and 31 points. Enter the Volunteers, who last week racked up 569 yards of total offense against Bowling Green to start Head Coach Josh Heupel’s second season. The offense loves to play fast and rack up yards quickly. 

The Vols are led by Quarterback Hendon Hooker. He can scramble and has improved his throwing. His main target is all SEC Wide receivers, Cedric Tillman. To spell those two is a two-headed monster at running back in Jaylen Wright and Jabari Small. Their downfall is an offensive line that gave up 44 sacks a year ago and Pitt loves to get after the QB.  

Pitt lost Quarterback Kenny Pickett from last year’s Conference Championship team. This has led to a more conservative approach offensively led by USC transfer Kedon Slovis, who threw for over 300 yards in his first game. That is good because they only averaged 2 yards per carry and will need to be more balanced in this game to keep the Vols off the field.  

This game will be tight. But I think in tight games, you have to go all out offensively. That gives the edge to the Vols. They score late for the mild upset  

PREDICTION TENNESSEE 38 PITTSBURGH 34 

 #20 Kentucky Wildcats vs #12 Florida Gators

Is Florida back? Last week the Gators took a big step towards that reality by upsetting the seventh-ranked Utah Utes. They get a second consecutive big-time matchup at home when conference rival Kentucky visits.  

Florida has had a revolving door of head coaches as of late and appears to have found some stability with first-year coach Billy Napier. Anthony Richardson is a dual-threat quarterback that made big plays in last week’s upset. The Gators rushed for 268 yards and it appears they will rely on the run to carry them. 

The Wildcats play likewise. Although, they will be without star Running Back Chris Rodriguez Jr due to disciplinary reasons. This means more will be asked of Quarterback Will Levis (a Darkhorse Heisman candidate) who threw for 303 yards last week and three scores.  

One could argue that Utah still should have won last week’s game. Mistakes did them in and Florida capitalized. The question is, can the Gators be ready emotionally after the big win last week? Florida cannot rely on Levis to make the same mistake Utah Quarterback Cam Rising made last week. However, I think the Swamp will be rocking and the rejuvenated fan base will be enough to get the Gators to 2-0.  

PREDICTION KENTUCKY 40 FLORIDA 41

#9 Baylor Bears vs #21 BYU Cougars

These two future Big 12 rivals square off in Provo tomorrow night in a titanic top 25 showdown. Both teams are thought to be possible CFP part crashers and a win in this game would go a long way in helping their cause.  

Baylor has sped to burn with Receivers Monaray Baldwin and Ben Sims. Blake Shapen returns as the signal caller for the Bears. They do replace their top three rushers from last season. Baylor is young across the board offensively and BYU thrives at forcing mistakes. 

Offensively the Cougars are no slouch, but they are a defensive team. In last season’s matchup in Waco, the Cougars were hit with depth issues that allowed Baylor to take control late. They are healthy this season. Couple that with the game being played in Provo, with a fan base dying for a top 10 win, and this has upset written all over it. So let it be written, so let it be done.

Iowa State Cyclones vs Iowa Hawkeyes

Last week the Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 7-3. They defeated the FCS power despite not scoring an offensive touchdown (their seven points were accomplished by a field goal and two safeties). Against any other opponent, their offensive ineptness would have led to almost certain defeat. The only thing that saved them, was a monumental defensive effort, herculean punting effort, and the Jackrabbits’ offensive ineptness. 

Now, here comes in-state rival Iowa State. Gone are offensive cornerstones Running Back Breece Hall and Quarterback Brock Purdy. Replacing them are Quarterback Hunter Dekkers and Wide Receiver Xavier Hutchinson (the duo connected for three touchdowns last week). The Cyclones have lost six straight in this series, but the Hawkeyes seem ripe for a loss here. 

Appearances can be deceiving. During Kirk Ferentz’s tenure, there have been times when the Hawkeyes have been written off and won a game, dispelling all worries. Dekkers is the prime concern for me. This is his first road start (in a VERY hostile environment), it’s a rivalry game and he is playing a phenomenal defense that will force him into mistakes. 

I’m going with the Hawkeyes to win this game and make it seven straight. So fire up the swarm, warm up the wave, and “Fight, fight, fight for Iowa”. The Cy-Hawk stays in Iowa City.

College Football Week 1 Picks

There is an old saying, “Fall seven times, stand up eight.” I must be a subconscious believer in that because even after my debacle that was picking the NCAA Tournament, I’m back here each Friday to pick the biggest College Football games of the week. 

To start us out on the honest path, last night I told someone I was picking West Virginia to upset Pittsburgh in the return of the “Backyard Brawl” game. Well, the Panthers won by seven. Thus I have started this season 0-1. Hopefully, I rebound with the following picks and start the year off right. 

(5) Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs (2) Ohio State Buckeyes

7:30 PM EST on ABC 

This is the premier match-up of Week One with two College Football blue bloods squaring off in Columbus. Notre Dame brings a talented, but unproven roster into this game led by new Head Coach Marcus Freeman (also an Ohio State graduate and former linebacker) and Redshirt Sophomore Quarterback Tyler Buchner (making his first career start). Meeting them is the potent Buckeye offense led by preseason Heisman Trophy front-runner, Quarterback C.J. Stroud. 

The cupboard is not bare for the Irish. They return many from a defense that was excellent last season. Returning are Defensive End Isiah Foskey, Jason Ademiola, and Line Backer Bo Bauer. They also added Northwestern Graduate Transfer Safety Brandon Joseph (to replace the superstar Cornerback, now Baltimore Raven, Kyle Hamilton). This is going to be key to slowing down Stroud and the Buckeye offense that is built around explosive plays. 

The biggest question is can the Irish score enough? They do have arguably the top Tight End in the county Micheal Mayer and Buchner showed last year in spot duty he can certainly make plays (mostly on the run). But will that be enough to keep pace with an offense that scored 45.7 points per game last season, returns key cogs in Wide Receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba (last season broke the single-season and single-game school records in yards and receptions), and Running Back TreVeyon Henderson (rushed for 277 yards in one game)?

The current spread is at 17.5 points for the Buckeyes, which is a bit too steep given the talent the Irish have. I also think the Irish will shock some people defensively by getting pressure on Stroud and getting stops. However, it’s a tough hill to climb for the offense. If this game were played a month later, I would say the Irish could hang with the Buckeyes. But offensively, the Irish have too many questions and Ohio State has all the right answers. Sadly, (I’m a Notre Dame fan) Ohio State is the pick.

PREDICITON: NOTRE DAME 28 OHIO STATE 41

(11) Oregon Ducks vs (3) Georgia Bulldogs

The Georgia Bulldogs FINALLY got over the hump and beat Nick Saban and Alabama en route to winning their first National Title since 1980. Oregon last year pulled off a major upset going into Columbus and knocking off Ohio State (a game that kept the Buckeyes from the College Football Playoff). No doubt they are looking to do the same to the Bulldogs in Atlanta. 

Enter new Oregon Head Coach Dan Lanning. Last year he orchestrated the Bulldog defense that was key in winning the championship. He also has a bevy of talent at his disposal with stud Linebackers Justin Flowe and Noah Seawell. One would be foolish to think that Lanning doesn’t know how to make Georgia Quarterback Stetson Bennett uncomfortable and other secrets behind the Bulldog offense. They would be even more foolish to think he won’t use them to his team’s advantage.

As was mentioned the key to the Bulldog’s run last season was a great defense. That defense only returns three starters but features a very talented group of young players that should fit in nicely. Many are expecting the offense to run wild here, but I disagree. I think defense rules the day. And I like Bennett more than Oregon’s Bo Nix to make the key plays when he needs to. Bulldogs are the pick.

PREDICITON: OREGON 13 GEORGIA 24

(23) Cincinnati Bearcats vs (19) Arkansas Razorbacks

3:30 PM EST on ESPN/ABC 

Two of last year’s best stories square off in week one. The Bearcats crashed the College Football Playoff Party after their 13-0 regular season (that included beating Notre Dame in South Bend). Arkansas started a shocking 4-0, this included wins against Texas and Texas A&M. Then the Razorbacks lost three straight. However, they rallied winning five of their last four games (only loss to Alabama, by seven)including the Outback Bowl. 

With returning players wise these teams are on the opposite end of the spectrum Cincinnatti lost much of their talent from last year’s squad. Including Quarterback Desmond Ritter and Defender Sauce Gardner, among others. Arkansas reruns much of their team including scintillating Quarterback KJ Jefferson. However, the Bearcats under Head Coach Luke Fickell have shown that they will be prepared and play to their strengths. 

I feel this will be the best game of the weekend. I think both teams will trade some thunderous shots, leading to a very “Nip and Tuck” game. However, when looking for an edge in close matchups, go with who you know. I know Arkansas has an explosive offense and they are ready to prove last year was no fluke.

PREDICTION: CINCINNATI 30 ARKANSAS 35

UPSET SPECIAL

Florida State Seminoles vs Louisiana State Tigers

SEPT. 4TH 6:30 PM EST on ABC 

Before anyone assumes this is sour grapes about Brian Kelly leaving Notre Dame for LSU, hear me out. To start last season the Seminoles took Notre Dame to overtime where they eventually lost. And, while they started the season 0-4, they rebounded to win five of their next seven and were within a field goal of a bowl game berth against rival Florida. 

LSU Returns only six starters overall and who will start at Quarterback is a mystery. Whoever starts under center will have playmaking Wide Receiver Kayshon Boute to target, the rest is as good of a guess as the quarterback. Despite a formidable receiving corps, the Tigers have major questions on the offensive line and could be missing Running Back John Emery Jr to suspension. 

The Seminoles are trending up. After some early hiccups, Mike Norvell appears to have Florida State trending upward. In his third season, he has stability on both sides of the ball, led by third-year Quarterback Jordan Travis. Add in a vast upgraded group of receivers and a three-headed monster at Running Back, and the Tigers’ defense under new coordinator Matt House will be tested. 

Everything here points to an upset. I’m taking the Seminoles

LOCAL FLAVOR 

South Dakota State Jackrabbits vs Iowa Hawkeyes

11:05 AM EST on FS1

This life only has two guarantees, death and taxes. A third could be added as well, Kirk Ferentz is Iowa’s Head Football Coach. Ferentz begins his 24th season against FCS foe South Dakota state. The Jackrabbits did make it to the FCS semifinals and are ranked second in the FCS poll. 

The Hawkeyes started last 6-0 (and ranked second in the polls) behind a stifling defense. But, an inept offense led to the Hawkeyes being embarrassed by Purdue and Wisconsin. They rebounded to win four hard-fought games in a row before getting housed by Michigan in the B10 Championship Game and losing to Kentucky in the Citrus Bowl. 

The stingy defense returns most of their starters. Any questions regarding the offense should not be an issue in this game. I look for the game to be close for the first half and for Iowa’s defense to play lights out in the second half, putting the Jackrabbits away.

PREDICTION: IOWA 31 SDSU 13

Like most people, I enjoy a good “beef” or rivalry. It can be between two sports teams, individuals, or even amongst your friends. They are entertaining and often have many plot twists and turns that you cannot help but be captivated by. That is unless the feud is so lopsided that it is no longer entertainment, but fodder.


To make it even worse, the one on the receiving end of the losses is so delusional, that they think they are ahead. That is not just sad, but dangerous.


It is no secret for nearly a year I have done my Classic Film Reviews for WMNH radio and Matt Connarton Unleashed (shameless plug time: it airs every Friday at 5 pm EST on WMNH or you can check the archives here). I was introduced to Connarton by my friend Dirk Don of Arrogant Media. I called into Matt’s show to speak about a man named Crazy Joe from New York.

Crazy Joe, media buffoon and misguided elderly man


This man was posting videos filled with racist statements. Among the ones that angered me, was claiming all Jews were evil for their part in the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The many flaws (and the fact he called himself a man of God, as a Christian myself something that disturbed me greatly) that he did not include, Jesus said forgive them Father for they know not what they do as he was being crucified, that many more Jews were sorrowful following the crucifixion and the worst is that Jesus preaches a message of love, not one where you call African-Americans “Chocolotos” and “Nigs” (his direct words).

Over the past year I have become friends with Matt Connarton, his significant other, the Honorable Jenny Coffey, Billy Painter of Outlaw Radio, and Rob of the Rob and Slim Show (recently concluded after a very successful run). I have listened as he has insulted them with homophobic and racial slurs. He has insulted Painter’s sister for dating an African-American, Coffey for her Hebrew heritage, Rob and Slim for their friendship, Connarton for only working for an FM radio station, and people on Connarton’s show (some who do have mental deficiencies, and Joe has called them “Retarded” in many of his videos, funny enough these individuals can conduct themselves well enough to be on the station, whereas Joe cannot). As despicable and reprehensible as all of this is, his latest act is what led to this blog post.

Connarton’s father, Martin, was a Navy SEAL that served in the Vietnam War. Early this year, Martin was faced with a major health issue regarding his heart. After calling into Matt’s show, Joe was told that he is quite charming and charismatic. Matt also added that if he were to stop the hate-filled speech and racist humor, he could be successful. A normal, sane person would take this as sound advice. Joe went in a different direction.


Over the next 30 hours, the crazed man did over 30 videos about Matt. The insults were plentiful. He derided Matt for his admission of suicidal thoughts on air during a recent bout of depression, accused him of censorship for hanging up on him (the next day Joe called in while making a video and said “Asshole” on air, being an FM station, Matt had to dump the call) among other insults. Then he berated Martin for his health issues and insinuated (falsely) that Martin had sexual relations with his son.


During Joe’s video tirade Matt posted a video (on his personal Facebook page mind you) upset with the deranged lunatic for insulting his father and the insinuations made. He also stated that Joe had White Supremacist views (just watch Joe’s videos, you can find them if you want. I will not disgrace this site with links), which to any sane person, would be an accurate statement.


Joe, often claims he is a man hardened by the streets of New York. What did this tough New Yorker do? He called Matt’s boss and proceeded to complain about what Matt said. Then for good measure, he attempted to call Painter’s boss as well. All the while portraying himself out to be the victim. That is about as hard and street tough as Charmin triple ply.

If the shoe fits Joe lace it up tight and wear it….


The problem is Joe does not see any problem with his views. These views are hard Alt-Right at their best and statements that would make David Duke blush at their worst. Joe says that to be called a White Supremacist you have to be a part of a White Supremacist group. Showing his technological deficiencies and blatant ignorance (just listen to his show, you will hear these deficiencies and ignorance) a mere 30-second Google search could have taught him that a White Supremacist is ANYONE that shares views that the White Race is superior above other races. These are statements he has said verbatim. Also of note, he has often proudly declared his Hispanic heritage, only a short time later to refer to Hispanics as “chico de Picos”. Add self-loathing to the psychological thesis that would be this man’s mental health evaluation.

What makes him dangerous is his obvious God Complex and massive delusions of grandeur. Joe claims he is trying to save the world from this “Leftist, Marxist, Communistic Society.” He proclaims he is the savior of real rock and roll music (often spelled as saver) and touts his views and hits. Failing to mention or display a basic understanding of website measurement, this includes time spent on the site, links clicked, and so forth.


He claims to be a bigger star than Howard Stern but yet doggie sleeping videos draw more viewers than his diatribes on a 10-1 ratio. His videos are his ignorant, narrow-minded views on repeat. All while spouting constant statements about sexual relations with farm animals (think he has some fantasies he needs to address) and obvious homo erotic fetishes he has.
The problem with the advancements in technology is that now any loon with an opinion can become a broadcaster or a blogger (I’m evidence of this). The bigger problem is that some of the individuals desecrate the foundations of broadcasting and journalism with their ineptness and ignorance. They should be ignored and dismissed so they slowly fall into the obscurity they deserve.

This is about the level of Joe’s talent and where his opinions belong

In closing, the people Joe has targeted have become his masters. These people just by their success have won. The fact that he has posted close to 70 videos the past week insulting them proves that this sexagenarian has so much hate-filled venom in his body, that he would rather spend the twilight of his life seeking fame that his limited talent cannot provide by spouting hate-filled ramblings, that if they were not so disgusting, the ignorance would be laughable.

So, What’s Beef? Certainly not this. A rivalry needs to be competitive. This is not. The success of those Joe, targets and the pathetic, delusional world he lives in, shows who the victors are. The hope is that Joe goes away. But his limitations will not allow that.

That is the saddest part of this “rivalry”

‘Pecking’ away at violent cinema

Film directors are, by nature, a different breed. For they are artists. They do not work with words, paints, or pallets. They work with their vision. Using equally talented artists to complete this vision on a digital or celluloid medium. Because of their attention to detail, they are considered eccentric, or at the very least a “touch-off”.

One director has many more descriptors attached to him. Crazed, difficult to work with, hard-headed, nihilistic, violent, raged, sexist, and many more. However, for the theme of this post, he shall be known as a forgotten genius.

This man is known as “Bloody” (known for his use of violence in his films) Sam Peckinpah. This man is known for flipping the western genre on its thematic head when his film “The Wild Bunch” was released (reviewed recently by yours truly for WMNH and Matt Connarton Unleashed) in 1969. This film was bloody and violent. Unlike all westerns before it, it embraced the notion that society had no more heroes. And, even those that were presented as heroes, were corruptible or already corrupted.

When the film concluded following an over 8-minute bloody battle between the gang of main characters and Federales (sparked when the General slits the throat of a captive member of the gang) that includes a 30-caliber Gatling gun. The film was praised by some and hated by just as many. Regardless of how people felt, its realistic violence and brutality have left an impression felt to this day. Many consider it to be one of, if not the greatest western film of all time.

Peckinpah never stood down from his moniker “bloody”. He stated that “I’m a student of violence because I’m a student of the human heart.” His films feature this taboo. This headstrong nature often led him to be at odds with major studios, crew members, and even stars such as Charlton Heston during the production of the 1965 film “Major Dundee”.

On the set, he treated the crew so badly that Heston threatened him with an army sword and charged him while reading a horse. He fired 15 crew members for trivial reasons. He also often was drunk on set. This led to the production going out of control. Depending on whom one believes this led to Peckinpah being fired (Columbia and Peckinpah himself) or abandoning the set in a drunken stupor (Heston and other cast and crew).

Despite his genius, Peckinpah was not without faults. He often used drugs (cocaine being his drug of choice) and alcohol. It was far from recreational. He used it while filming. This caused him to be difficult to manage for studios, demanding and abusive to his crew and stars. Nonetheless, in most of his films, his film prowess wrapped in violent, brilliant cynicism broke through. Over the years, film analysts and fans began to appreciate everything Peckinpah brought to the world of cinema.

Violence is not the only taboo Peckinpah embraced, in 1971’s Straw Dogs, he added sex to the violence Filming two graphic rape scenes and then having the women’s Husband take vengeance on the men who committed it, Peckinpah took his viewers on a psychological journey through emotions of vengeance, despair and lack of belonging.

Many say violence has no place in cinema. That all it does is lead people to do evil things and contribute to more violence. There are two sides to the argument, Peckinpah once stated “Well, killing a man isn’t clean and quick and simple. It’s bloody and awful. And if enough people come to realize that shooting somebody isn’t just fun and games, maybe we’ll get somewhere.”

What if, to appreciate the value of life. We as people have to see the disturbing reality of violence. If we can see that then, we MIGHT be able to restore our view on life. I’m not talking senseless, blood and guts slasher films. I’m talking about the violence that is used in an artistic sense (if you do not know the difference, I’m shocked you were able to read this far). The violence is real, gritty, and unchained. That Peckinpah, Sergio Leone, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and more have used to paint nihilistic visions of despair that many in the world live in.

Sadly, Sam Peckinpah never was able to see the reverence he has in the world today. He died in his sleep in December 1989. Despite his difficult nature and unfair judgments on his films, he has created works of art that transcend time and generations. You may diminish his character or even his works, but in doing so you are discounting the genius behind the madness.

But maybe, “Bloody Sam” wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Reel Greatness of 1994

The world of cinema is one wrought with years of transition and greatness. From the separation of the Motion Picture Code to the counterculture movement of the ’60s brought forth by Vietnam and other national unrest to the teen angst dramas of the 80s and ’90s, cinema can often be looked at as a sign of the times.

Because of this, there have been many landmark years that stand out to people. One of these years, in my opinion, is the greatest cinema year ever, and the impact it brought to audiences is still being felt today.
1994 was a critical year not just for cinema but the world. President Bill Clinton gave his first state of the union address, Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide and OJ Simpson was arrested and accused of the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown-Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman.


For the cinema world, it was also a time of change. Turner Classic Movies debuted with a showing of “Gone with the Wind”, Pierce Brosnan was announced as the next James Bond after a six-year hiatus for the series. And Viacom purchased Paramount Communications.

These changes in society and cinema pale in comparison to what was brought to viewers on the big screen.

First, Director Quentin Tarantino became a household name with his second film, “Pulp Fiction.” This film was told in a nonlinear format (like his first film “Reservoir Dogs”) that had not been used much since the days of film noir. Tarantino used an eclectic soundtrack, biting, gruff dialogue, and a star-studded cast to tell the tale of criminals and crime. This film featured an unapologetic look at this world using over-the-top violence and language that made many shudder. Regardless this film, (reviewed recently by yours truly on Matt Connarton Unleashed) showed where we were at. We craved violent crime because this is what society related to. We wanted realism and despite the exaggerated violence, people connected to that.

Connection is the key for this year in cinema, for the most part.

Director Robert Zemeckis fresh off his run directing the Back to the Future Trilogy, brought us a timeless classic that became the highest-grossing film for Paramount Pictures (at the time), “Forrest Gump” (based on the novel by Winston Groom). The film told us the story of a simpleton that gets caught in some of the biggest moments in American history. This heartwarming tale garnered Tom Hanks his second consecutive Best Actor awa5rd (he won for “Philadelphia” the previous year). Again, we run into connection being key. This film reached many audiences. Some lived through the tumultuous times Gump encountered. Then there is the broader level, we relate to Forrest because we have all felt out of place, and despite that have overcome the circumstances.

Family films were not devoid of impact in 1994. Disney released “The Lion King” to critical acclaim. The film was a box office bonanza. It averaged 793,377 dollars per theater on opening weekend (a record that still stands today). Until 2003 it was the highest-grossing Disney film ever (beat by “Finding Nemo”). It was also nominated for Best Picture (Losing to the aforementioned “Forrest Gump”).

Finally, many major stars debuted this year. Cameron Diaz (“The Mask”), Ewan McGregor (“Being Human”), Natalie Portman (“Leon: The Professional”), Jude Law (“Shopping”), Scarlett Johannsson (“North”), and Shaquille O’Neal (“Blue Chips”) among many others made their big screen debuts this year. These are stars even today that carry gravitas into any performance (O’Neal excluded) they star in. This year gave us our first experiences of these legendary performers and adds to the importance of the year.

Timelessness is so important to cinema. That is why this year stands out to me., The films, the debuts, and the critical time in history add to the importance of this year, not just for cinema but overall. There are many more films and performances that this year spurned. To me, 1994 is the greatest year in cinema history. For the memories it gave us, the timeless characters and changes it brought, it is unmatched and underappreciated.

Hopefully, that changes and we recognize the greatness we have overlooked.

Rock Chalk Investigate a Jayhawk

Corruption runs rampant in society. While I do believe there is good in the world., I’m not naïve enough to think that everyone in a position of power obtained it by honorable means. I try to look for the good in everything, that includes sports, which I’m what you would call a “sports nut”.

Recently, my favorite time of the year ended, March Madness. Otherwise, known as the NCAA Tournament. In the end, the Kansas Jayhawks won the championship, overcoming many years of their toughness and resolve being questioned. They overcame a historic 15-point halftime deficit to claim the title and etch their names in history.

That is for the time being at least.

Currently, the Jayhawks are under investigation by the NCAA dating back to 2019. The basketball program is cited for five-level one (the most severe allegations a university can be accused of) violations. The main accusations are that Head Coach Bill Self and Assistant Coach Kurtis Townsend partnered with Adidas (the schools athletic apparel sponsor) to, according to the statement of allegations, “Intentionally and willfully engaged in NCAA violations and blatantly disregarded the NCAA constitution and bylaws.” They are also accused of the dreaded and vague lack of institutional control.

The investigation began three years ago. It also is not believed any current Kansas players are a part of the investigation. During a Final Four press conference Self stated that he felt the end was coming soon. The question here is what does that end entail? For that answer, we need a brief history lesson.

On March 12 (one day before Selection Sunday), Louisiana State University (LSU) fired Men’s Head Basketball Coach Will Wade following receipt of a notice of allegations that Wade provided impermissible benefits. This was the second set of allegations during Wade’s time as head coach. Yet, LSU was still allowed to compete in the NCAA tournament (They lost in the first round to Iowa State). Now, safe to say this appearance and season will be vacated by LSU as punishment. Also, all scholarship players have left the university, leaving the program in shambles, even before the NCAA brings down the hammer of punishment on the school.

Going back even further the University of Michigan had Final Four appearances in 1992 and 1993 vacated along with the season results from 1992-93, 1995-96, and 1998-99. They also removed banners commemorating the aforementioned two Final Four appearances, 1997 NIT championship, and 1998 Big Ten Tournament Championship. This stems from players taking money and other items from the late Michigan Booster Ed Martin (notably NBA Hall of Famer Chris Webber). Also, the school was prohibited from having the players from those teams on campus and being mentioned in record books for a period exceeding a decade.


There are many more tales I could tell. The result is some players had nothing to do with the misdeeds that were committed. They worked hard, “did it the right way” and so forth. To have their contributions removed because coaches and other players did not follow the rules is a grave injustice. The solution here is simple.

The NCAA must adopt a rule that if an athletic program is under investigation for major infractions, they are not eligible for postseason play. It does not matter if it is the cash cow of a program that is football or water polo. If they are being investigated, they stay home for the postseason, no questions asked. This would allow players to know upfront, before committing to a university, that the postseason is not an option. It would (hopefully) jumpstart the NCAA to conduct these investigations in a timely matter. And not allow the school the heartbreak of vacating wins and possible championships. Also, with the transfer portal being wide open, players can leave if an investigation is opened after they are with their team, without any eligibility concerns


The time has come for the NCAA to send a message that these investigations are serious. Over the past few years, I have flushed the naïve thought they are “Student-Athletes” they are not. They make billions for their respective universities and are mostly part of professional athlete training grounds. should be able to make money off their likeness (without the school’s influence, as is the current rule). But they should not be subject to the heartbreak of years down the road having their accomplishments and accolades stripped away for the misdeeds of others.

Admittedly, this does not solve the problem. It does not even scratch the surface. What it does do is make the NCAA proactive instead of reactive. A rule of this nature might make coaches think twice before breaking the rules to make an extra couple of million dollars in endorsements for a tainted championship.

Quite frankly, the fans, the students, and the players deserve better. It is time for the NCAA to deliver on that.

March Madness: Final Four and National Championship Game Previews and Predicitions

Here we are. The final weekend of the College Basketball season. Hard to believe that just two weeks ago 68 teams were vying to be the National Champion and now we are down to 4. There have been upsets, history made (a fifteen seed made the Elite Eight) and at the end of it all we have four historically great teams and one monumental, never before happened showdown.

FINAL FOUR PREVIEW

GAME 1: (1MW) KANSAS JAYHAWKS VS (2S) VILLANOVA WILDCATS 

TIP-OFF 6:09 PM EST

When this tournament first started, I had Kansas as one of my Final Four teams (my other three Gonzaga, Arizona, and Kentucky are all gone). This season there have been questions about Kansas’ toughness and consistency. Safe to say, those questions have been answered. They had a battle with undermanned Creighton in the second round, another struggle against Providence and then a dominant second half against Miami turned a deficit into a 26 point blowout. Kansas has leaned on its stars Ochai Agbaji, David McCormick, and Christian Braun. Arizona State transfer Remy Martin has meshed with the offense at the right time. Kansas is starting to look like the team that many had pegged to win it all. 

Villanova has flown under the radar for most of the season. They won the Big East Tournament behind the shooting of Senior Guard Collin Gillespie. The Wildcats have had to be gritty all season long. They only go 6-7 players deep and have lost second-leading scorer Justin Moore to a torn Achilles. On the surface, they should be in trouble. But head coach Jay Wright has been here before and knows how to the most out of his team in these situations.

What I see happening in this game is, Villanova cannot get into a track meet. They have to make this game slow and keep it a half-court game. Kansas is a strong defensive team (especially in this tournament). Gillespie must have a big game and the Wildcats have to find a way to get Kansas into foul trouble to even up the depth issue they will face. To combat this, Martin needs to be the star he is morphing into in this tourney. This takes the pressure off the other three stars and will allow them to operate freely. If this happens, Villanova will be in for a long night. 

I have a hard time picking against Wright. But, Kansas is playing so well right now and they seem destined to play Monday night. The loss of Moore is going to be monumental here and as good as Gillespie is, Kansas is more complete. I got the Jayhawks moving onto Monday night.

GAME 2: (2W) DUKE BLUE DEVILS VS (8E) NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS 

APPROX TIP OFF 7:49 PM (30 MINUTES FOLLOWING FIRST GAME)

In history, there have been many rivalries and feuds. In college sports, it does not get any better than Duke and North Carolina. These two teams have had monumental battles throughout the ACC and Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski has no bigger rival than the Tar Heels. This is just purely poetic to have him face off with them in the Final Four in his final season. Add in the fact these two storied rivals have never faced in the NCAA Tournament and this is going to be a massively historic matchup. 

Duke has handled this being their legendary head coach’s final year throughout this season. At his point, it is safe to say they are used to it. Of greater concern is the fact that Carolina dominated Duke in Durham in the last game of the regular season for Coach K and his last home game. The Tar Heels did this using a frantic defense that kept Duke out of rhythm all night, especially Stars Paolo Banchero and Wendell Moore Jr. 

North Carolina is spearheaded by a three-pronged attack led by Armando Bacot, Leaky Black, and Brady Manex. During this tourney, the Tar Heels have played exception defense while shooting lights out. They have frustrated opponents by getting out to leads early and using their pace to take teams out of their game. 

Duke, much like Kansas, is showing their preseason promise. Banchero, Moore, and Mark Williams have been dominant this tournament and have shown that they are worthy of all the NBA hype they have received. Add in the rise of Trevor Keels and the timely hot hand of Jeremy Roach and the Blue Devils are a load to defend. If you zone them, they find the soft spots in the zone and get to the line. If you play man, their length is a mismatch because all five players can shoot from anywhere, and that threat allows them to drive the lane with impunity. 

The key is going to be, can North Carolina replicate their performance from Cameron? If they can disrupt Duke early and shake their confidence they can then rely on their three-headed monster to get out, run and force Duke to chase them around. If they cannot do this, Duke will be able to move the ball around and pick their shots. That will then allow them to set their defense and play their game at a moderate pace and wear down their rival. 

This game means everything in this rivalry. If UNC wins, they can say they ended Coach K’s career. If Duke wins they are one step closer to giving their coach a championship ending to his career. This will be ugly early with both teams feeling each other out. However, I think Duke will be too much and their newly found championship resolve will shine through. Banchero hits a late shot and the Blue Devils salt it away at the line. 

PREDICTION: DUKE BLUE DEVILS 68 NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS 63

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: KANSAS JAYHAWKS VS DUKE BLUE DEVILS 

In 1992 when Duke won their first National Tittle they beat the Kansas Jayhawks. It was the first of 5 for Coach K and was the beginning of his ascent to greatness. 

These two teams are nearly identical. They both have star power, they both are playing phenomenally at the right time and both were preseason picks to be here (depending on who you listened to or what you read). 

The key to the game will be one thing. Fouls and mistakes. These two teams are reasonably deep, so whoever can get the other into foul trouble first will have a major advantage. Kansas does have issues of cold shooting and turning the ball over. Against Miami in the Elite Eight, Kansas had an eight-point deficit at the half. This was due to bad shot selection and turnovers. They were able to overcome this and win by 26 points. Against Duke, they won’t be able to turn the tide like that. I also feel that Duke’s starting five will be able to keep Kansas off the offensive glass and limit them to one-shot opportunities. Their size will also disrupt the offensive flow of Kansas and force them into mistakes. 

Finally, it will just be poetic for the greatest coach ever to win a championship in his final game against the team he beat for his first national title. Duke wins their sixth title in an explosive, nail-biting fashion.
